Problems Installing a Lexmark Printer with Windows XP...

Hello All,

I have been having this issue for quite some time now, and I was hoping that
someone out there knows what I can do...okay...so I got a Lexmark X7600
series All-In-One printer (copy/print/fax/scan, etc). I tried to install it
and a got error messages like there was no tomorrow saying:

1) The Printer Communication System has encountered a problem and needs to
close
2) The Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close
3) instgui.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

These three were the only ones popping up.

So, I call Lexmark...they can't figure it out...I call Dell they can't
figure it out... I use both companies websites to troubleshoot the problem,
but nothing is working.

I actually ended up restoring my computer to factory settings due to some
other issues, so I tried to reinstall the printer today and the same problem
occurs. Now the "Printer Communication System..." error message is continual
and won't stop popping up (like every 2-3 minutes).

Does anyone have a solution to this? Do I need to reinstall something else,
is it Microsoft, Dell, or Lexmark causing the issue. I wouldn't think that
Dell/Microsoft would make it impossible to install a non-dell printer...but
this installation process works perfectly fine on a MAC/Apple laptop.

Please respond with any information you may have.

Thanks, Alison.

Make sure you have the latest driver package from the Lexmark website.... of
course, even if it was a Dell printer, it would be made by Lexmark and
rebadged, so Dell should know all about it.

Installation as always should be software FIRST, and only when the software
tells you, connect printer to PC with USB cable.... or eithernet/wireless if
it's so enabled.

Do you have other printers attached to this PC? Are they working correctly?
Do you have all the XP Service Packs?

Okay...I know it's been awhile, but I finally got around to trying your
suggestion...and it didn't work. I don't have any other printers installed,
and I followed the instructions correctly: I downloaded the latest version
and then installed it...as soon as the installation started the problem
started again...continual error messages indicating the Printer Communication
System has encountered an error. Before all this, I restored to factory
settings again (which is from 2006) because of another issue...so there is
nothing else that could be affecting it. I only have service pack 2
installed...since the technical support person said to leave the automatic
updates alone...and that it is not required.

Should I install updates/drivers from microsoft.com first and then try again?
Which service pack should I be using?
Is there anything else that I need to download/update?

Thanks again,
~Alison.

This reply concerning the problem dates back to about one year ago. You
would think that Lexmark has figured out the problem by now. Evidently it
can occur on more than one model.

"This page has the latest x2470 drivers
http://search.lexmark.com/printer/US/en/. Select the correct one for your
operating system. Be sure that you follow the owner's manual for the exact
way to install the printer. Some need the printer connected first and others
need the drivers installed first and then the printer is connected. If you
are running XP try and install everything in Safe Mode (F8 at logo screen).
You can also go to the Lexmark Tech Support page for your printer and see if
there is a solution or call them."
